Ryunosuke Koike was born in 1978 in Yamaguchi Prefecture and graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo. Formerly a Buddhist monk of the Jodo Shinshu school and head priest of Tsukuyomi-ji temple in Tokyo, he is now master of Tsukuyomi Hall in Kanagawa Prefecture. In 2003 he launched iede cafe, a space that combined the functions of a temple and a café, and his meditation classes became known as some of the hardest to book in Japan. His books, which present Buddhism as a practical method for training the mind, have sold over a million copies in Japan. His bestseller The Practice of Not Thinking (Shogakukan) has been published in English (Penguin), German (Piper), Korean, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese.
