In 1942, as the war between Germany and the Soviet Union intensifies, the daily life of a young girl named Selafima living in a rural village near Moscow is suddenly taken away. German troops launch a sudden attack and kill Selafima's mother Ekaterina and other villagers. Selafima is saved by a female Soviet soldier named Irina and is asked "Do you want to fight or die?" Selafima decides to become a sniper at a training school where Irina is an instructor. She trains to take revenge on the German sniper who killed her mother and on Irina who burned her mother's body. Selafima eventually faces the front lines of the Battle of Stalingrad, a turning point in the war.
