The heartwarming story of a cat who saves a young shut-in

Despite getting into the prestigious university he always dreamed of, Souya found that life there wasn’t what he hoped. Floundering in his interactions with people, he fell into a deep despair, dropped out, and has confined himself to his home for ten years. Isolating himself from everyone—including his family—Souya is convinced his life is over.

One day, during a downpour, he hears the faint mew of a kitten trapped in a gutter. The kitten’s desperation spurs Souya into action for the first time in years. He rescues her, names her Marin, and this small act of courage awakens feelings he had kept locked away.

For Marin, Souya steps outside his front door for the first time in a decade. He goes to buy food and litter. He explains himself to the vet. He replies to a stranger who speaks to him in a shop. The realization that he can act to protect a vulnerable creature plants a seed of confidence that slowly begins to grow. He starts a blog about his life with Marin; cat lovers respond; a “cat network” forms and leads him to a job. He starts exercising so he can be strong enough to care for her. His confidence deepens. He rebuilds bridges with his family.

After ten years of suspended animation, one tiny animal restarts Souya’s life. Love for something else can inspire someone to take back their own. The cat is a beacon of strength, quietly restoring color to a future he thought he had lost.
