THE WEIRD TALE OF KAGEFUMI INN is a supernatural mystery novel that follows ghost story author UMEKI KYOUKO as she investigates and documents supernatural phenomenon in modern-day Japan.

The novel is split into four parts. Each one covers a different “weird tale,” or ghost story: THE WEIRD TALE OF KAGEFUMI INN, THE WEIRD TALE OF OBORO TUNNEL, THE WEIRD TALE OF MURKY HILL, and THE WEIRD TALE OF THE FROZEN MELON. These four parts are further broken down into alternating points of view: the primary narrator for the tale, and excerpts from Kyouko’s own manuscripts. Each story features a variation of a locked-room murder mystery where spooky phenomenon complicate the clues. Kyouko’s prolific knowledge of Japanese folklore enriches the reader’s understanding of each supernatural encounter and leads them to a satisfying conclusion.
