The main character, a girl named Midori, is fourteen years old and has never fallen in love. Around her many other women gravitate. There is Midori’s grandmother, on her own because Midori’s grandfather went missing; her single mother, who gave birth to Midori after falling in love with a man who already had a wife and a child; her cousin, about to get a divorce due to her husband’s domestic violence; and her cousin’s daughter, Momo. Set in Osaka, this novel depicts the ever-changing meaning of happiness by describing the lives of the all-female Tatsumi family and the women around them.
